United Nigeria Airlines has signed a landmark agreement with Southwest Airlines for the delivery of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, in what is seen as a major step towards expanding the Nigerian carrier’s domestic, regional, and international operations.
The acquisition, announced at Southwest Airlines’ corporate campus in Dallas, marks the first time United Nigeria Airlines is adding the Boeing 737-800 to its fleet. The aircraft, known for its fuel efficiency, operational reliability, and passenger comfort, will strengthen the airline’s capacity to compete in Africa’s fast-growing aviation sector.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, said the deal represents a significant milestone in the airline’s four years of operations.
“The Boeing 737-800 upgrade will pave the way for a more profitable expansion and growth,” Okonkwo stated. “The new fleet will allow us to operate additional flights across approved domestic, regional and international destinations, carry more passengers and cargo at competitive fares, and provide point-to-point services that reduce stopovers and save time for travellers. This acquisition will also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth in line with the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Okonkwo also highlighted the role of Boeing in supporting the acquisition process and commended Southwest Airlines’ strong maintenance culture, which he said aligns with United Nigeria Airlines’ operational standards. He revealed that the airline is considering acquiring an additional four 737-800 aircraft, which would bring the total order to 10, with deliveries expected between the first quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.
Boeing officials welcomed the deal, noting its importance for aviation growth in Africa.
“We are pleased to welcome United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family with its first 737-800,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa. “The 737-800 will provide United Nigeria Airlines with superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong returns in today’s competitive market.”
The transaction was facilitated by SkyWorks Holdings, LLC, a global aviation advisory and leasing firm. Anders Hebrand, Chief Commercial Officer of SkyWorks, praised the partnership, describing the Nigerian airline as a “great home” for the aircraft.
United Nigeria Airlines, which commenced operations in 2021, has rapidly grown into one of Africa’s most ambitious carriers, serving key Nigerian cities and planning expansions into regional and international markets.
Southwest Airlines, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is the world’s largest operator of the Boeing 737 and remains one of the most profitable low-cost carriers globally.
